Jambo Freedom School Parents and Families,
Week four of Freedom School is coming to a close, with only two and and a half weeks left we are making the best of our time! This week scholars went to Roller Garden a skating rink for children and families. Scholars skated for a few hours and enjoyed the free time to be with friends.

Everyday we start the day with Harambee, a swahili word for “Let’s pull together” After Harambee, we start our integrated reading curriculum also known as IRC. The reading curriculum is designed to help enhance the scholars reading level and personal growth and awareness.

Early on, we have taught the scholars about the Black Panther Party and the revolutionary purpose that they served in the black community. Remarkably, some students already knew about the Black Panthers from Huey Newton to Fred Hampton, and the galvanizing effect that they had on our people. Along with the profound discussion, we watched the documentary The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution.

This week has been very eventful, we also celebrated a scholar’s birthday. The first grader was very excited about the cupcakes her mom brought in to share with the entire Freedom School. After, the scholars wrote thank you letters to the scholars Mom.

Every Thursday, scholars have a swimming lesson at North Commons Waterpark. Needless to say the scholars had fun and are definitely looking forward to next Thursday already!

We also brought nature into the classroom! The special guest for the week, Ms. Allie, showed the scholars a turtle as well as a turtle’s shell. The scholars were impressed and amazed at how wonderful of a creature turtle’s can be. One of the scholars even has a turtle of his own!

Parents and families, please feel free to copy, save or print the images of your scholars. Our mission is to ensure a safe and fun environment for all of the scholars here at Folwell Park Freedom School. Also, be sure to check on this website for weekly updates of your scholars.
